so maybe she pukes sometimes, and she's the cat most likely to pee in inappropriate places... but ellie, the cat who likes being a pillow, is my favorite. purrrrrr.

I've been knitting this shawl a long time. mom gave me the pattern from her boss barbara when we were in boston in october. it's something i've put away and gotten back out a lot the past few months, the edging in particular was hard for me to finish. (look at all those leaves! but i am so happy with how it blocked! i want to wear it to lisa's aunt's wedding in 10 days. i just need the right dress.

SPROUTS! as you can see the aerogarden is all dried up due to a nasty fall while i was away. but the rest of the garden is started! we have lettuces and scallions and chinese broccoli and collards and lots of other things i'm sprouting from seeds. these are zucchini. this is my last year for them. every year i grow nice zucchini leaves and lovely zucchini flowers and never ever have i gotten a zucchini. this year, i am moving on.

Lisa! loves the asian grocery store. i don't usually like to go there because it reeks of dried fish and lisa! spends too much time in the sauce aisle. but she always comes home with good ingredients she turns into yummy curries and the the like. while she was contimplating sauces i came across this. why package in oil or water when you can can it in NATURAL INK?

i love this shadow so much. every time i come home late from the red line the bike is always there and it always makes the best shadow. i thought it was time to finally take a picture of it. but now that i'm captioning it i'm wondering... have i done this before?

Although i wanted the two different tree colors in my photo, this one is better because it's more interesting and my nosering is spring green and the bush behind me is also green, and matches my garden party shawl which i will be finishing at knit night tonight! and it's friday and the week is over and there is still daylight left! horray!

spring is coming to chicago! the trees are blooming! sadly, i get home so late i can only see them after dark. it's been such a long week. i am so tired.

Crazy busy with administrative professionals week at the flower shop. but LIsa! is also a professional, preparing me a dinner of fingerling potato cakes with chard and ayudar sauce topped with hard boiled eggs. yum!

UGH. so gross. i didn't even want to touch it. so people who aren't monogamous don't have true or deep relationships? or maybe they don't drink wine? i have no idea what this is about. maybe it's supposed to be a magic potion to stop your husband from cheating.
230/365
this is a total cheat because i am not anywhere in this screen shot. but this is my LIFE these days. all i do is play plants vs. zombies. but aren't they cute?

So i'm only posting about 3 times a week. (well, i'm only posting every other week, but i'm only taking pictures 3 times a week.) i know this isn't the goal, but i think it's better to take occasional pictures than give up all together. don't you agree? comments, please!
this is on the way to knitting. from the middle of nowhere where i work, i have to take the grand bus to the blue line. i hate the blue line. it's dank and dirty and old and creepy. i love how they have the ferris wheel for navy pier even though navy pier is miles away.

another week, another wound. This week we did silk knot in aerial arts class and it was so much more fun, although i am just as sore. my thighs were hurting as i had my hips on the knot, it seemed like it was pinching and i guess i was right cause i'm all bruised now. i kind of like it though because if "no pain, no gain" is true that means i am gaining things!

Lisa!'s out of town at her best friend's mother's funeral. she's stranded in Kansas City because there are no flights out so she's taking the amtrak today, and i had to spend an extra night alone. but... this is how i woke up this morning. lisa! is a thrasher and the bed needs to be constantly remade, the duvet is a little ball every morning. it's so funny to me i sleep so differently.

another warm saturday! it makes me want to spring clean. i walked all the way up clark street to vote for our ward's budget, but was turned away at the door. aparently i live on the wrong side of the street from the 49th ward. oh well. at least the guys with the ice cream carts are out! i am so excited to live on clark in the summer. it seems like such a neighborhoody place. it's too bad we don't have stoops. it seems like a total stoop kind of place. and there are not one but TWO paletarias! both la polar and la monarca. my paleta is coconut flavored and it the guy's cart was a monarca one. i am also addicited to having a corner store again. i remember being sent to joes as a kid to get missing ingredients for things. now lisa! has to send me. someday we'll send our kids to get milk or ice cream (sometimes a necessary staple) at S&S foods- although they'll have to be much older to cross clark without a light by themselves. i'll probably make them walk down to the next block where there is one. or just watch out the living room window. and yes, i do eat more than just popcicles. it's the shirt making me look gaunt, i'm not nearly that skinny. and yes, washing the filthy table is on my list of things to do tomorrow, thanks for reminding me.

i love the little pipe mouths sticking out of this building. i love their little curly mouths on the bottom. i walk past them every week on my way to knit night, but they are impossible to manouver into my sp. i like the way this one just has the fringe of my (mom's) scarf in it.

stopped at edgewater produce on my way home from work and they had big boxes of enormous strawberries for $1.99! poor meike, she wanted strawberries for her birthday. it's just a little too early, and there's no california in germany.
222/365
I'm gonna get BLISTERS! i totally forgot that i signed up for an aerial arts class before i left for germany. good thing they sent me an email! the first day was trapeeze. it was good to start with that cause i remember from my circus arts class it being the hardest and the scariest. it's still plenty scary! i have muscles i'd forgotten i have that are a little sore- they will be much worse tomorrow and the next day! i'm really excited about the class though, and hopefully i'll be able to attend for more than one semester and actually get in shape and be able to do impressive things while hanging from the ceiling!

super nice weather this weekend! lisa! and i were going to meet justin at morseland but their outdoor seating isn't open yet, so we went to heartland cafe instead. then we walked to the beach! it was the first time i'd been there this year i think. i think the last time was that super warm day in november. my bulbs are comming up- well, 5 of 75 are. i think the squirells got a lot of them. and i can't remember where i planted them all. and maybe some of them are later spring bulbs. we'll see. i want to plant some lettuce and radishes now, too. and see if i can get anything else growing since it's SO LONG till last frost.
220/365
HOME! and boy am i jetlagged. meike and i didn't even take a last photo in the airport, we got to talking and forgot. germany really felt like home to me this time, it's totally a home place for me. i don't know if i was more sensitive about it because of mom or if it would have been everywhere anyway, but the theme of my trip was family. everyone had a story about relationships or parents or kids and let me tell you, no one was about mom and dad and 2.3 kids and a cat and a dog and a white picket fence. family is messy and complicated, and i think even a bigger word than queer is. (and let me tell you, queer is pretty big!) I feel so lucky to know so many cool people, and that they will make such an effort to see and host me when i come visit their country and for a motherless girl, it's good to know that there are places i can call home far away in PA, even farther away in Germany, but i've somehow made a home that looks like this for my everyday use.

sorry sarah! she got cut off, she's sitting to the left, but this one has my eyes open and meike's laugh is cute and josua isn't glowing so much. this is at meike's mom's house. we had meike's birthday party there because she doesn't have enough chairs in her apartment ;) the three friends sitting behind me are all friends from high school, so i know them, i've met them a bunch of times already. in general, everyone was really good about translating for me, and i picked up on an amazing amount of conversation. it was a LOOOOOOONG day, but i stil had lots of fun. we didn't even get out the wii (which is pronounced "veee!" in german!)

i'm so in love with ruth. i'm so excited to travel with her (and lots of other people!) in october. with her snazzy bahnkarte 100 she traveled to frankfurt to visit me for the day. we went to this cute coffeeshop and caught up. we sat on old velvet armchairs on the sidewalk and ate german cheesecake, which is made out of quark instead of creamcheese and much better than the american version. and can i just say, ruth is notoriously unphotogenic, but which one of us looks good in this picture and which one of us is all horsey teeth? the one who has had 218 days of practice and should know better, that's who.

i spent the day wandering around düsseldorf. i ended up walking all the way to the hauptbahnhof from anne and peter's place. i did some shopping along the way. we had passed this church the previous day and it was a landmark i was looking for. unfortunately, everytime we went home we went a different way! luckily, anne had wi-fi and i could look at a map on my "ipod touch", and that helped me figure out where i was going.
216/365
anne's amazing library. the ceilings are so high she needs to get a ladder before they can put stuff on the top shelves.
