while tidying my desk today i found a blank book with an inscrutable list in it. what's it for? i have no idea. i don't remember writing it.
humid
air coating chapped lungs
pop of saliene bottle (hiss)
thickness/clouds/tangible
suburbia vs. urban
the importance of transport
newness of life/jealosy/fear
Kira1 aIII cec. " " JI Jan 1
K-PAX
any guesses? it was on the page after "topics to blog about," none of which i can remember what i wanted to say. those are:
-gender
-frances
-treehouse poster
-why i'm veggie
-new years horror stories
-tori, joni, ani
-being a cunt
-disgusting things
i mean, if you put in a request i COULD blog about any of these things. but i don't think they're particularly as remarkable as i did when i jotted them down.
plus, G.Z.'s phone number. who i think by the extention works for columbia, but again. i'm just not sure.
"i'm not a invisible. i'm sort of just hidden. like a chameleon, but without the taste for insects." - elizabeth crane, when the messenger is hot
"why was fabulousness important? the world was a scary, sad place and adornment was one of the only ways she knew to make herself and the people around her forget their troubles." - francesca lia block, necklace of kisses

google reader
so i've switched to google reader from bloglines. it seemed to be what all the cool kids were doing. and it also seemed like a good time to tell you about the blogs i read. because i want you to read them too. more importantly i want you to tell me about the blogs i SHOULD read. because i know there are more people with facinating lives who will let me spy on them. who am i missing?
In Alphabetical Order:
below the eight. i started to read because she left a comment about my kitty once. Fraulein N is funny and lives in philly and now wears skirts- what's not to like?
cta tattler. an essential read for any chicagoian, especially a public transit rider, ESPECIALLY a red line commuter. this is my life.
disconnected train cars of thought. my friend pam's blog. i miss going to school with her- i believe in reading any blogs of people i know and like in real life.
dooce". come on. you could TELL me you don't read dooce, but i probably wouldn't believe you.
(en)gender. "she's not the man i married" is on my booklist, but until i read it i'll just read the author's blog.
from the mayor's desk my mother, with her taste in older men, i think is a little in love with the mayor of reading. and please, who doesn't love a mayor with a blog, especially an elderly one? it makes me feel a little charmed towards my hometown.
girlyblog i'm a girlyman fan, and so i read a girlyblog.
here be subtletyjamie's blog, my first blogging friend. i' so glad she's back online again! these are the new friends i want to meet, bloggers like jamie.
misanthropic tendencies" sarah's blog, which though i enjoyed before, keeps getting better and better. i want to be friends with krista and sarah in real life. i should really get on the moving to philly thing.
monochromatic girl krista's blog, which i keep on my blogroll in hopes she will someday update again.
my girl purple the girlfriend's blog. where you can catch everything i'm too lazy to write about.
one shoe offliz's blog, another blog i miss. a blog i seem to ALWAYS click through to leave comments on.
pesky apostrophe more philly, more knitting, more local veggies. i never have to worry about mac not posting.
smartypants diary secret confession: i look for mz. smartypants everywhere i go. she just lives a mile or so due west of me. she rides the redline to work. she takes the devon street bus. i keep hoping i'll bump into nora on the street someday. reading a blog that's set in your city is even more exciting than watching a movie set in your city
the panopticon again, i secretly imagine spotting franklin at hydrate or cocktail some night. and i'll actually recognize him since he's a celebrity blogger i've actually met! i NEVER leave comments for him, though, because all those knittin ladies worldwide leave so many twittery comments that by the time i scroll all the way to the bottom it seems it's all been said.
postsecret. again, if you don't like postcards, you must at least like art. if you don't like art, you must at least like secrets. i can't imagine anyone not getting sucked into postsecret.
womenfolk one of jamie's great suggestions, the free downloads have given me some amazing new artists. i hope it gets up and running again soon!
finally, i have a whole folder dedicated to comics, since i finally don't get the paper anymore. it's such a pain to click through i won't post links unless you really really want them and can't be bothered to do a google search yourself, but i read:
a softer world, agnes, doonesbury, for better or for worse, frank & ernest, opus, pearls before swine, and real life adventures.
ok, that's what i read! what do you read?

while i'm at it....
why don't i just do the year in review, too? here's the first line of the first post of each post 2007:
january: oh, i just feel so behind! i want to tell you all about my christmas, but i just can't. am trying to get my life reorganized.
february: yep, the time's right on the bottom. 7am. why would i be up blogging then? but then you may notice the date- feb. 1st.
march: typed up todays entry. was adding tags when the rainbow started spinning. safari not responding. not that my stories were any more clever the first time.
april: i don't deserve friends as nice as you. i may bitch or feel lonely sometimes, but when the shit hits the fan, i've got a rockin support group.
may: my life continues down its crazy path. i can't quite get it through my head how radically my life will change in less than 2 weeks.
june: bernadette's here. i'm so tired. it's so hot. i am so sad i have to get up early to work tomorrow. there's pictures on flickr.
july: dad arrives tomorrow night! must go to bed! so late! bags not done! argh!
august: i know i've been gone a long time. it's been busy, the gf's been over. blah blah blah. and it's too hot to have the computer on.
september: i'm back- did i mention that? it's been a busy week. the wedding was lovely, mom and i went to the maiden creek sacred harp sing and the elverson contra dance, so i ended up havinga a folk filled weekend.
october: i know. i keep thinking these stories, but i don't get a chance to write them down. ever. like the worlds most PAINFUL customer.
november: mom comes tomorrow. the house is ready, but i feel emotionaly unprepared.
december: oh, this weekend! it's been so lovely. d and i went to christkindlmarkt after work on friday, and ate potato pancakes and drank glüwein, and bought zimtsterne, and were careful not to break any glass ornaments, and had a lovely seasonal time.

final 07 resolution recap
ok, when resolving to make my life a productive and delightful place to live in 2008, i should start with reflecting on the same in 2007. here was last year's list.
1. spend less than 1 hr online daily
i sucked at this. i prefer dial up where it tells me how awful i've been. now, there's no way of knowing. suggestions? i don't turn the computer on untill i really need it, sometimes not at all on a saturday. i've tried setting the timer, but then i don't get up. sometimes i've even overcooked dinner by ignoring the timer while online. what do you think i can do to keep this one this year?
2. watch 4 movies a month
i was pretty darn close. it would be great to get my netflix up to 4, i can only hit 4 when counting movies friends own and movies i see in theaters, but still i think i watched more movies in 07 than 06. will count to give you cold hard numbers.
3. go to figure drawing once a month
never did. not once.
4. do a patternless crossword every week
very successful. i do the nyt crossword every monday, and the patternless as well. i said if i kept this goal i would switch to tuesday, and then in 7 years, i would be able to go to competitions and stuff...
5. write a letter every week
eh, so so. i write one about every month, average. i did send more thinking of you postcards out last year, though, so that was an improvement. i think this is a good lifestyle choice, and hopefully can continue to do something simalar under the flylady.
6. take a photo every day
mostly. i missed 4 weeks this summer and another 2 over xmas and i'm sure lots of random days in between. but my hard drive can attest to how many photos i've taken this year. certainly many more than an average of one a day.
7. do a sketch every day
i don't think i did one. not even a doodle at work.
8. drink the flylady kool-aid (eg shine my sink everyday)
this was a "hard" one that i accomplished, something i had to work on, and took some resolve. my mom gave me lots of complements when she came to visit, and i feel like it really was a very positive change. i think it's really easy to fall back into CHAOS, though, so i think this one's gonna make my list again this year, so i stay aware of it.
9. complete plus level square dance class
finished in may. wish i had more opertunities (and took more opertunities) to do something about it.
10. take violin lessons
did, once. need more. also, more importantly, need to practice.
11. paint more
painted bathroom stuff orange. i think that was it.
12. read more
this was just here to make myself feel good. of COURSE i was going to read more. i always do.
13. knit more
actually, was pretty good at this. i feel like i'm knitting a lot. especially now that i have so much new yarn. i'm going to have more specific knitting goals for 2008. this goal was also made possible by podcasts.
14. travel more
PA, st louis, michigan and san francisco. definately more than 2007. am all the poorer for it, though.
15. write more
i couldn't even bring myself to blog more, let alone work on a novel. not one word of the novels has been written in 2007.
16. go to bed on time, get enough sleep
rarely, rarely does this happen.
17. celebrate seasonally (eg. ice skating in the winter, sending out valentines, decorating easter eggs, etc)
i think i would do better with a chart. i did some of the above, but not all of them. actually, the begining half of the year i was much more enthusiastic. it was only towards xmas that i started to loose my gumption. i did send valentines, dyed easter eggs, went to street festivals, laid in a pile of leaves, carved pumpkins, and walked in snow. i also subscribed to my csa, which i think is a huge seasonal step.
18. floss.
good news- i floss pretty regularly. bad news- the regularity is once a month. should really increase that frequency. cavities are so expensive.
19. make my arms strong
i was gung ho about this for about a month may-june. i don't know how to get into it again. i want to make it a goal this year, but it's too cold when i get out of bed to do anything but get dressed these days, and if i do it before bed it keeps me up.

don't walk
in our lives full of warnings, some seem so reasonable, believable, followable. in a fire, i would never take the elevator instead of the stairs. i wouldn't cross when the light tells me not to. and i won't cross the tracks outside of the approved walkways.
tben of course, there are the warnings i disregard. i eat and drink on cta vehicles. i stand above that step. i use that product while charging. i leave that product plugged in when not in use.
but there are some..
let's just say that everyone has a secret rebel streak in them somewhere. i'm sure some people would commit theft or arson or something if they "turned bad." and others can't resist the pull of the dark side and actually do those things. me, my crimes would be much more minor. but still, though minor, every time i see these warnings, i have to make a concious choice to obey.
i want to pull in case of fire. i want to eat silica gel. i want to write below that line.

the price must be paid
and this time, the cost is $25 and a day of feeling unreliable, stupid, and like i was letting everyone down.
didn't set my alarm last night. woke up when the cat climbed on me, 7 minutes after i was supposed to be at work. on boss's day.
ugh.
but the day went fine, and once i got home i:
-talked to z
-made collard risotto
-did the patternless crossword
-met with slipcover guy re: my new project, due thursday
-threw away the science projects in my fridge
-organized my tupperware
-cleaned out my 2 food shelves, including reorgaizing, throwing away everything older than mitzi, wiping them out and changing the shelf paper.
-checked and cared for my email
-entered in the coke caps on my desk (everyone, feel free to share your mycokerewards with me!)
of course, i wanted to start on the sewing, too, but you can;t have it all.

resolution recap
wanted to do one for summer, too, but never got around to it. so now here's my fall acomplishments:
falures:
1. spend less than 1 hr online daily. it continues to take up my life.
2. watch 4 movies a month. i continue to average about 2.
3. go to figure drawing once a month. still have never been.
7. do a sketch every day. yeah right.
11. paint more. could i possibly paint less?
15. write more. not at all. but i'm PLANNING on doing nanowrimo. i'm gonna write a novel in november. so if i manage any of that, well. first, i probably won't blog AT ALL. but this one will certainly move to the other column.
16. go to bed on time, get enough sleep. i've been doing ok at the latter, but i suck at the former. thank goddess i don't work 9-5m-f.
18. floss. eh, maybe every other month. and the week before the dentist.
19. make my arms strong. i did this for a while. but i got out of the habit. how to get back in?
sucesses:
4. do a patternless crossword every week. maybe not EVERY week, but with frightening regularitly.
5. write a letter every week. i tend to binge, still. but i usually pull off an average of a letter every other week.
6. take a photo every day. barely a success. but i'm still tumbling the 365day track in fits and starts.
8. drink the flylady kool-aid (eg shine my sink everyday). while i'm not a dedicated sink shiner, i do have a weekely houseblessing, morning and evening routines, and am just starting excitedly on her basic weekly plan.
9. complete plus level square dance class. done and done. wish there were advanced options. want to change this to contra.
10. take violin lessons. acomplished... now i need to practice the darn thing. so it should really be in the falure catagory.
12. read more. put this one on mostly so there'd be a plus.
13. knit more. with all this sock yarn? oh yeah. i knit a sweater this year.
14. travel more- st. louis, san francisco, michigan, pa, day trip to baltimore. i think that counts.
17. celebrate seasonally (eg. ice skating in the winter, sending out valentines, decorating easter eggs, etc)i think i need to define this more. i was better in the spring. but i did travel a lot during the summer and wear lots of sundresses and now i'm making applesauce and mushroom squash soup. and i bought mums for my planters. so so i think, while not extraordinary, i'm certainly celebrating seasonally more than i'm, say, sketching.
so i'm half way there. my spring recap had 5 falures, but 6 in a "hopeful" catagory. so i definately feel there is self-improvement happening. watch me become a better person daily!

lights! camera! action!
elizabeth asked today what "hot points" are, and it made me think about all the movie vocabulary i've aquired. i learned a lot making the short, and so much of it was just picking up old words or phrases or job discriptions. the aformentioned hot points means large pieces of equipment coming through, get out of the way! crafty is the food and snacks outside of meals. your call time is the time you're supposed to come in, your call sheet is the paper that gives you that info, along with all sorts of other useful information, like what scenes we're shooting and what actors are in them and where to park and what the weather's like and where the nearest hospital is. when you get on set every day, you get sides, which is a little booklet with a call sheet on the front, and the script for the scenes we're shooting that day in order on them. the DP is the director of photography, who sits behind the camera. they tell the gaffer how to light it. the electrics figure out how to get the electric to the lights. the grips grip things- lights or shades or difusion or reflection panels, or sometimes things like dollies. the best boy of each of these is the head one. anyway, once all that is taken care of, the 1st AD makes every one pay attenion with "picture is up!" then everyone stops all work and is very quiet. then he says "roll sound!" and the sound people reply "sound speed" then he says "roll camera!" and the AC (assistant to camera?) holds up the slate. they turn on the camera, the slate guy calls out "scene 47, take 2" or whatever, the dp says "speed" and the director calls "action!"
stay tuned for next time, when i discribe what the script supervisor does and why i want her job so much.

more vegetables!
i ordered extra stuff this week in order to have a small dinner party this weekend. the hot delivery chick hauled it up the stairs and took the crate back, so i don't have to store it in my kitchen all week. she just handed me the big bag of veggies to explode all over my kitchen table. i got asparagus, a kiwi, goat cheese, honey. my regular mix included spinach, salad mix, saute greens (i think they're collard) pink pink radishes, cilantro and bright rhubarb. their strawberries didn't come in, so they sent me 2 boxes of blackberries- free! i'd gone to the the grocery store yesterday to buy more bagles, and i ended up buying yoguhrt and granola as well, cause it's a better hot-season breakfast. a nice change. and i bought a great big bag of cherries, because i was hearing the berry siren song. and the cherries came in bigger bags than blueberries or blackberries or raspberries. they're a bit early, and so are alternately crunchy or sour, but they are beautiful in the blue colander.
MY REFRIGERATOR IS FULL OF BEAUTIFUL, HEALTHY, YUMMY THINGS! i wish so many of you could come over and help me eat them all.

shrek 3 and other childhood memories
went to watch it this weekend with d and jr. i made a joke that i'd blog about it, but then she asked why i hadn't and i thought, why not? it shouldn't just be a joke.
see, the thing is, i love movie reviews. especially the clever time out chicago ones. and i've taken classes. most notably gender, culture, and media. so afterwards, we tend to have discussions like this:
me: did you like the movie?
d: yeah, i thought it was good. i really liked it. it was funny.
me: jr, did you like the movie?
jr: YEAH!
me: what was your favorite part?
jr: i liked when he went WOOSH, and then the bad guy when KRUNCH, and then he wnt POW! that was cool!
d: did you like the movie, caitlin?
me: i did like the movie. i was particularly pleased with the large number of women cast members, and the strong roles they were alowed to play. there was even the scene were they mocked their traditional counterparts for sitting around waiting to be rescued! there really aren't enough movies where there's a pack of women who turn into ninjas. also, of course, is the sweet and loveable fiona, who is one of the few positive roll models who's big and fat and green. so that of course gets lots and lots of points from me. there were only 2 things that really got on my nerves. first, the king's death wasn't very respectful. i felt uncomfortable laughing at the king 'croaking" in various fits and starts. and i was very upset at shrek not considering fiona getting pregnant as the natural result of their marrage. if he was REALLY worried about not starting a family yet, there are precautions he could have taken. really, you'd be amazed at the other uses of some of those swamp plants. but those were minor things in the sweep of the whole movie. i really appreicated its messages about beauty, that having good hair doesn't matter, it's being kind to others, and protecting those you love from danger even when it means sacrificing yourself. i didn't even mind the fart jokes.
d: oh.
so you can see how i can be annoying to take to cartoons.
actually, while typing all this up, i remembered somethign else that annoyed me. after all those le leche league meetings i went to as a child, i cringe at baby bottles in films. but i justified it by saying that though fiona breastfed, she didn't have enough for triplets and suplemented with slug juice.
which brings me to a totally different topic, toys i was not allowed to have as a child:
1. guns
2. baby bottles
3. anything advertized on saturday morning television.
i think i'm going to do a 365day portrait about that.
and THAT makes me think of something else from my childhood. in the catagory of "crazy childhood theories" you know, the answer to the interview question, the subject for the "kid logic" this american life episode.
so i had this theory as a child. that tv could somehow track your spending habits. and they sent you commercials for what they thought you needed. and once you bought it, they turned the commercials off. the basis of this theory was toothpaste commercials: colgate and crest advertised heavily, but aim, the toothpaste my family used, never ever advertised on tv. so i occasionally requested saturday morning cartoon toys not so much because i wanted the toy, but because i wanted the stupid commercial to stop repeating itself.

empty landfill
so my trash situation is kinda crazy. i produce about 1 shopping bag worth of trash per week- and it's clean and lightweight, mostly fabric scraps and packaging like tetra-pak or saran wrap. (also, oddly enough, junk mail and catalogs. i have such a problem sorting. i don't know why there's such a mental block for me to recycle them, but there just is.) there is nothing "ew" about it all piling up stinkly till i can walk to the dumpster, and this makes me so happy. there are three major reasons for this:
1. d and i drop off our recycling at the city of chicago's bins- it's easy to do, but has a better chance of being recycled than blue bags mixed in with the trash. also, they accept plastics 1-5.
2. the worms. anything icky, slimy, stinky, mushy- it all goes in the worm bin. the really gross stuff in my kitchen trash was organic, so as long as it doesn't weigh more than a pound or so, it's safe to just clean out my refrigerator into that little black box. i tested it with a whole container of cheezy pasta primavera i made secretary's week- and ended up carrying around with me for 48 hrs. it was about a pound and a half and was pretty nasty smelling before i buried it. i was sure it was going to stink up my kitchen, but for a day or two it just smelled earthy- a good dirt smell, not disgusting at all. then it got this huge black mold on top. then it dissapeared. horray for the wormies!
3. flushable. cat. litter. best idea ever. i think i'd probably use it even if it was WORSE for the environment, i'm such a fan.

resolution update
a quarter of the way through the year, i think it's time to look back and see how i've been doing with these goals i've set. because why make resolutions if you can't revisit them in april?
unsuccessful:
1. still spending hours online. damn you flickr!
3. have not been to figure drawing ONCE. am hoping for a change once squaredancing and fiddle and manifest are over.
7. have had no interest in sketching every day
11. i think about painting. but i never do it.
15. i want to write. i should do that.
hopeful:
2. am watching MORE movies, though not up to the 4 per month yet.
5. i forgot about the letter a week goal. i'm going to be better about it, i promise. maybe i'll write one now.
13. because i've been reading more, i haven't been knitting THAT much more. but i am getting closer to finishing the 2nd sleeve of my sweater. once that's done i'll be confident enough to move this into the successful category.
14. though i've been to st. louis, that's the only travel i have planned till august. i have a free plane ticket that expires the end of july, and i guess whether i use that or not will determine whether i move this one up or down.
16. though i havn't been good at going to bed on time, i feel i have been getting enough sleep. but this one definately needs to be worked on.
18. eh, i floss like once a month. i guess that's an improvement.
successful:
4. i've been pretty faithful with the crossword. i've missed maybe 2 weeks since the begining of the year. and i've started to finish them too- woot!
6. a photo every day has been easy with the 365day project and community
8. though i don't shine my sink every day, i'm still putting flylady in the successful catagory, because my house is cleaned regularly- or was until i started working tuesdays- but you can't look at my closet photos and put this one in the hopeful catagory!
9. i'm now a plus level square dancer, and i'm online shopping for a petticoat to wear to graduation!
10. i have 6 weeks of fiddle lessons under my belt
12. read more was a goal? i read ALL THE TIME.
17. i haven't been real great about celebrating seasonally, but i've been passable. i sent out 4 valentines. i dyed easter eggs with jr. i didn't go ice skating or make pysanky, but i am going to go to the green fest to celebrate earth day, and i want to make plans for mayday. i don't know what yet, but i'll let you know.
ALL THIS TO SAY- i've added a new one! i was watching motorcycle diaries (see goal #2) and i thought gael garcia bernal's muscley arms were so hot. then d told me i looked all buff in this photo:
so i decided it is time for me to become strong! or at least work my triceps and biceps until i can be useful moving my friends furnature. how hard could it be for me to add 10 tricep dips and 5 pushups to my daily routine?

SUPERLISTS!
saturday errands
yesterday d picked me up early and we:
-dropped my recycling off at the new drop off bin
-took my serger in and ordered new new needles for it
-rented my violin
-ate lunch at su van's
-bought pysanky supplies in ukranian village
-went to square dancing lessons
-dyed my hair hot pink
is it any wonder there was no time to blog?
